The Denver Zoo

We went to the Denver Zoo recently and saw a lot of cool animals. The weather was great and we got to see most of the park.

My Favorite Moments

  1. Monkeys and Apes - These guys are always amazing to watch. I saw one moneky right next to the glass that caught a glimpse of a fly in the sunlight right next to his head. He darted his eyes around a couple of times trying to follow the fly when he tried to catch it with his bare hand. After a quick jab at the fly, he turned his clenched fist over and slowly opened his hand to see if he had caught the fly. There was no fly, but I realized just how similiar these guys are to humans in their mannerisms.
  2. Seals - The first time we went by they weren’t even out, but on our way out of the reptile building we got to see them. Its just amazing how smoothly they glide through the water.
  3. Leapords - The cats are always fun to watch. So laid back, but also so intimidating.

Logan River Fly Fishing Report

I just fished the Logan a few days ago below 2nd dam and I was surprised. I only fished it for about an hour and a half and caught 5 and landed 4. The water level is high, but not as high as its been the past couple years. I used a stimulator with a copper john dropper. I caught all of them on the copper john except the last brown hit the stimmy. All browns and one cutthroat. The cutthroat was tagged.

I’m off to Colorado today and am hoping to get some good fishing in on one of the days. Never fished there so should be fun!

Fly Fishing the Logan River

Chris and I had to get together for one last shot at the Logan River before the spring run-off. The flood watch alert came out 30 minutes before we left. Luckily, we got there just in time.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t as productive as the day before for Chris. I tied on a small blue-winged olive, casted it on the left side of the bank near some overgrown bushes, and saw the head of a nice Brown bob-up and take my fly.

Problems with Browsers Lock Icon

Browser Lock IconHaving problems with your cart or page that “should” be secure, but isn’t? Is the lock broken or just not showing at all? Been there, done that. I went through a list of things that should have fixed the problem.

  • Check all images are being sent with https
  • Check JavaScript code
  • Check cookies

Are Your Images Secure?

You can check to make sure all your images are being transfered securely by checking the page properties in your browser. For IE, I couldn’t find a place to check this, but in Firefox you can. In Firefox, go to Tools -> Page Info and click on the Media tab. Once there, double check that all the addresses have “https” on the front of them. If some don’t, check and make sure your pages has “https” in the URL and make sure your image tags don’t retrieve images directly using “http” in the link. Relative URLs are good here.

JavaScript

Make sure you don’t use any JavaScript in any anchor tags’ href attribute. IE doesn’t like it. Just change them over to the onclick attribute and that should work fine.

Using Cookies?

My page uses cookies that were not created to be used securely. When you create a cookie, there should be a parameter (a boolean value) to tell it to be secure or not. I found this not to affect my page from actually showing the lock icon however, it could be or become an issue in the future.

I’m Still Learning Mod Rewrite

All these thing were fine on my page and the lock icon was still not showing up in IE and was still broken in Firefox. My problem was because I had my site setup to force a secure connection on my cart page, and force a non-secure connection on all other pages that didn’t need to be secure. I did this to help with search engine optimization. This was why the lock icon wasn’t showing up though. The cart page’s stylesheet was not being loaded into the page using “https” because I had a mod rewrite code in my .htaccess file forcing everything but the cart page to be transmitted using “http”. So if all else fails, check your .htaccess redirects :P

Spring Time

Well, it’s spring finally (even though it’s going to snow tomorrow) and I’ve finally got something up here. Hopefully I’ll find some more time to personalize it. I plan on adding my flickr photos feed as well as my blogroll. Come back once in awhile and see what I’ve added.
